Kanye West manages to make the news yet again. But this time, it's not because of a twitter rant or supporting Donald Trump. Kanye is now filing a lawsuit with his record labels and publishing company. Why? Allegedly, the reasoning behind the lawsuit is that Kanye wants to gain complete control over his own career and felt he was being restrained. Although, It's hard to tell when the complaints filed in Los Angeles Superior Court are almost entirely redacted.
This news has a direct effect on the music business. More and more artists are becoming independent from labels and taking control of their own careers. This movement is leading to less emphasis on getting signed and artists heavily relying on record labels to take their careers to the next level. This trend will continue until record labels inevitably die out. Kanye has been known to stir controversy and honestly, this news did not surprise me at all. He is definitely unique in his musical style and the way he expresses himself. I don't agree that a lawsuit is the answer, but I believe that leaving the labels is a good move for him.
