Sunday, February 3rd was the most anticipated game and show of the year, the Superbowl. This year was arguably one of the most controversial when it came to the halftime show because of the Colin Kaepernick scandal. Rihanna was the first artist to be asked to perform on America's biggest stage but turned it down due to her stance on the Kaepernick issue. Maroon 5 was soon offered the spot and accepted.

When the time came for the performance, the band also had guest appearances by Travis Scott (who performed his hit "Sicko Mode") and Big Boi . They performed a 12 minute medley of past and current hits like "Moves Like Jagger," "Sugar," "She Will be Loved," "Harder to Breathe," "Girls like You," and "This Love." Despite the months of planning and rehearsals, Maroon 5 recieved a lot of hate from social media about the performance. Some people are even calling it the "worst halftime show ever." The show has also become a victim to relentless memes about everything from the 5 second Spongebob clip to Adam Levine's tank top.

Even though Maroon 5 is facing a lot of hate on social media, they're getting a lot of love with sales. All of the six songs the band performed (combined) rose in sales by 587%. Their entire catalog (everything they've ever released) gained a total of 488%. Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode," also saw a 80% increase along with Big Boi's "The Way You Move," at an enormous gain of 3,408%. The 5 second clip from Spongebob even prompted the song "Sweet Victory," from the "Band Geek" episode to gain 524%.

This means a lot for the music industry. Even though Maroon 5 is facing relentless hate and even threats on the internet, their sales are the best they've been in years. No matter how much controversy a band performing at the Superbowl faces, they will always see an increase in sales after being exposed on such a big platform. Some people who may have forgotten about Maroon 5's past hits and decided to buy/stream them after seeing the halftime show.
