When you first read the title of this article, you may think that Twenty One Pilots fans are irrational. Going Gold means selling 500,000 units. But as it turns out, "Vessel" is only two tracks away from every track reaching Gold status. Twenty One Pilots were the first band in history to achieve this milestone with their 2015 album "Blurryface," but both Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN." and Cardi B's "Invasion of Privacy," have achieved this also (but they are the only ones). The two tracks that are short of certification are "Fake You Out," and "Truce." Twenty One Pilots fans launched the "Fake You Out Campaign," to get more attention drawn to these songs and get them the necessary streams, airplay, and purchases.
This means multiple things for the music industry. First of all, it proves that pop is no longer the reigning genre. All three albums that have every track certified gold are not pop. This is kind of like a "revival" if alternative music. If Twenty One Pilots actually get every track on "Vessel" certified, they will be the only band in history to have 2 albums with every track certified. This also means that fan bases are becoming more powerful. Twenty One Pilots is not a fully mainstream band and certainly not as popular as artists like Ariana Grande, but yet they have an enormous amount of units sold. This is because of the "cult-following" they have. I have never seen a fanbase quite like the "skeleton clique." These fans are so dedicated, some even travel the world to go to multiple shows and camp out in the middle of winter for a good spot near the barricade at a show. The fans also dress the part as the different characters from the different albums. This proves that if a band has a smaller group of dedicated fans rather than a larger group of casual fans, they will probably be more successful. One last influence this news has on the music industry is that more albums will probably achieve getting every track gold certified. All of the albums that achieved this did so within the same year. This also proves that the album is coming back. While the industry may still be heavily singles based, there is growing hype behind albums. If every track goes gold, it shows that the album sold a lot more than it's chart topping single. This is only the beginning of album related milestones.
