Two weeks ago (October 5th) Twenty One Pilots released their fifth album TRENCH and it is making Rock/ Alternative chart history. All 14 tracks have made the Hot Rock Songs top 25. Along with this, TRENCH also takes up 11 of the 25 top Rock Streaming Songs which their single "My Blood" currently leads at no.5 and 72 million streams. TRENCH also claims the number one spot on the top Rock and Alternative album charts. Twenty One Pilots' previous album Blurryface sold 147,000 album units in one week and held the number one spot on the rock album chart for 9 weeks and the alternative album chart for 21 weeks. So far, TRENCH has already beat Blurryface's one week album unit sales with 175,000.

Twenty One Pilots making this much history and progress on the charts is very significant. This band is best known for their genre crossing. It's impossible to put a 100% accurate label on their music. They incorporate ukulele, rap, and even some screaming in some of their songs just to name some of the variety of genres they cover. Their popularity signifies that music consumers are beginning to stray away from music that has a clearly defined genre. Twenty One Pilots also discuss topics like depression, suicide, and inner insecurities through symbolism that only members of their fanbase (the "Skeleton Clique) would understand. They have formed one of the most unique fanbases in the music business and their popularity also shows how fans want music made directly for them. Fans want to feel like they are connected to their favorite artists and want music that only the fans who truly follow the band and care can understand. Twenty One Pilots have changed the music industry to be more fan based and have sped up the death of genres (along with artists like the 1975 and SZA). In the future there will be more bands that don't follow genres and categorizing music may come to an end completely (in the far off future) and fanbases will become the band's biggest priority.
